• Weapons Plant Report Disputed: Neither the former workers at a nuclear weapons plant in Largo nor Sen. Bill Nelson are buying into a recently released Inspector General report. The report by the Inspector General for the federal Labor Department says claims for benefits under a program for sick plant workers are being processed according to law. Congress passed a program in 2000 to compensate sick workers at the General Electric plant and pay their medical bills.

• Audit finds good, bad in sick worker program : Knoxville News Sentinel: A new audit of the sick nuclear workers compensation program found that the U.S. Department of Labor was following the rules, but the report said the federal agency could do more to help the claimants and accelerate the process. "Based on our review, we found that the claims decisions issued by DOL were based on evidence supplied by or obtained on behalf of claimants and complied with applicable laws and regulations,&q uot; the report by the Labor Department 9;s Office of Inspector General said.

• Compensation issue for Cold War-era workers unresolved: A move to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act to include a new disease has picked up steam, but a group of Cold War-era workers remains outside the system with little immediate hope of being included. Uranium miners, drillers, haulers and others who now suffer from a relatively common form of leukemia could become eligible for compassionate payments from the federal government under legislation proposed by Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo. Expanding the list of diseases covered by the compensation act, however, wouldn?t help core drillers, who located uranium deposits by drilling into the sandstones of the Southwest in the 1940s, ?50s and ?60s. Grand Junction?s Lester Rich, 75, a core driller during the uranium boom times on the Colorado Plateau, has so far dodged all of the diseases listed in the compensation act, as well as the form of leukemia now being contemplated for inclusion.

• IA: The Hawk Eye: Screenings offered for IAAP workers: Free health screenings, available through University of Iowa studies of both Army and Department of Energy workers at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant are continuing through this fall. Researchers are continuing to enroll people in the IAAP Munitions Workers Study. One aim of the research study, directed by Laurence Fuortes, M.D., professor of occupational and environmental health, is to assess exposure to beryllium alloys among conventional weapons workers at the plant. Participants also will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire and to provide a blood sample for analysis of beryllium sensitivity. Participation requires a 30- to 45-minute time commitment. Compensation is provided.
• Nursing care for sick workers - Oak Ridge, TN - The Oak Ridger: Professional Case Management of Tennessee held town hall meetings Thursday at the American Museum of Science and Energy to share information with federal workers about its program and other related sick-worker issues. Professional Case Management is a Department of Labor-enrolled provider of home nursing to chronically ill nuclear workers. PCM recently opened an office in Oak Ridge and is currently serving 30 Oak Ridge residents who are eligible for care under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).
